Making a Difference After a Tragedy: An Alumni’s Inspiring Story About Giving Back

As another year comes to a close, Casa Teresa is excited to have been recently contacted by one of our former residents, who shared with us how she was able to make a difference in her community this year.

Lucy was a resident at Casa Teresa back in 2017 and moved to Florida with her family where she has devoted herself to her community since completing our program.

Back in September, Hurricane Ian struck Florida as a Category 4 storm and would become one of the most deadly hurricanes to impact the state in decades. As many locals are still grappling with the effects of Hurricane Ian leaving hundreds without homes, Lucy and her family took to action by creating social media posts to help collect donations for items needed such as gas cans, baby formula, fuel, food, and water. Lucy found a way to help bring about change in her community!

Here is Lucy’s story:

“My husband and I have been called upon to lead a ministry serving those struggling with addiction and homelessness in our community. It’s really something special. In the midst of all this, Hurricane Ian hit south Florida really hard and left many devastated and without anything. For now, our efforts have been focused on getting supplies to those in need.

There has been an amazing outpouring of love and support from my local community. Together we have been able to put together hygiene packs and personalized totes for approximately 51 people. Plus donations of clothing, cleaning supplies, face masks, food, and baby supplies (formula, diapers, etc). My heart just breaks for these people. I was homeless because of the lifestyle I used to live. They are homeless by no fault of their own and it really hurts my heart. So we jumped into action and it has been a blessing!

I remember being at Casa Teresa and getting cards on every holiday and personalized gifts. This inspired the idea to personalize the totes we made to bring to those affected by the hurricane, with messages of hope and love. It was really something special to put these items together. The love I received at Casa Teresa changed my life and is still changing lives all the way in Florida!

Thank you for loving me through the darkest, most challenging times in my life. I’m a better woman because of each of you at Casa Teresa.”

Lucy’s message inspires us and serves as a reminder of how we can give back to our communities this holiday season. When you support Casa Teresa, you support women like Lucy, who make a positive impact in their own communities!
